PAX 2011: Sonic Generations Creates An Excellent Hedgehog Sandwich
Sega's upcoming Transonic Generations looks like it's going to continue the recent (excellent) trend of quality hedgehog videogames.
Sega seems to be falling back in make out with Sonic the Hedgehog, supported recent quality releases like Sonic 4 and Sonic Colours. This is certainly a wanted convert from several long time of middling releases starring everyone's furry blue mammal, and I've got some good news from Kiss of peace: IT looks like Sega's still dedicated to making quality Audible games, based on the luck of Sonic Generations that I got to bring up.
Sonic Generations stars deuce versions of Sonic: both the modern version and his to begin with, 1990s incarnation. The two are thrown together via a hole in time that sucks today's Sonic into the recent, where helium meets his younger self. The gritty is all about how the 2 hedgehogs stimulate been sandwiched together, meaning they instantly have to race through versions of levels from late Hearable titles, figuring out WHO's messing ahead time and setting things mighty.
Now, the two versions of Sonic offer different play experiences. Modern Sonic has fully 3D courses to run through, which are broken up with episodic battle sections. Before you groan: This is non a retread of Sonic Unleashed. The combat is improbably sagittate, based on sonic jump and past torpedoing towards his enemies, and they're generally pretty easy to avoid if you want to just run past times the bad guys.
The Classic Transonic sections, meanwhile, are fully 2D levels with 3D backgrounds that on occasion affect the field Audible's continual across. These levels are pretty crazy and fast, supported what I got to play; if a player wants to realize the best time possible, they'll have to replay a level different multiplication systematic to work when and where they should jump.
The levels on exhibit were go under in San Francisco, inspired aside another levels from Sonic Adventure 2. In the Classic levels, the gaga bigrig/harvester is back and following Sonic, but it's largely seen in the background. The Modern level, in turn, is much more of a 3D affair, involving downward-sloping races (both happening a snowboard and along foot), spare-time activity sections, and the said scrap areas. Again, it was incredibly fast and a ton of play, though I did encounter an area where the fixed camera was a little bit of a interference (though, admittedly, it wasn't brave-ending and only happened once.
Visually, Sonic Generations looks beautiful stunning. The nontextual matter are really rather lovely; they're bright and cartoonish and actually look corresponding they'd fit into the games they'Re supposed to take place in.
Sonic Generations is due call at November for PS3, 360, and 3DS.
